don’t let language barriers hold you back: our favorite language apps

In this episode of the Travel More Podcast, we discuss how overcoming language barriers can greatly enhance your travel experience. Speaking even a few words in the local language can make a trip more immersive, enjoyable, and less stressful.

The Importance of Language in Travel

Many travelers feel intimidated by foreign languages, but learning essential phrases can lead to more authentic interactions and a deeper appreciation of local culture. We share personal stories about times when knowing just a few words made navigating new places much easier and created meaningful connections with locals.

Practical Tips for Learning a New Language

Here are some of our effective strategies for language learning before a trip:

    1. Learn Key Phrases – Mastering basic greetings, ordering food, and asking for directions helps significantly.
    2. Use Language Apps – Apps make learning accessible and interactive.
    3. Keep a Cheat Sheet – Writing down important phrases ensures quick access when needed.
  • Google Translate – Use Google translate to take photos of menus and translate in real time.

Comparing Language Apps

The podcast explores different language apps, highlighting their benefits and limitations:

  • Duolingo – A gamified and fun approach, best for beginners but limited for advanced learners.
  • Babbel – More structured lessons focusing on real-world conversations, requiring a paid subscription.
  • Rosetta Stone – Immersive teaching without translation, effective but potentially challenging
  • Memrise – Uses real-life video clips and a spaced repetition system for vocabulary building, making it engaging and practical.
  • Drops – Focuses on visual learning with bite-sized lessons, great for those who prefer quick and interactive study sessions.
  • Mondly – Incorporates speech recognition and chatbot conversations to help with pronunciation and real-world practice.
  • Netflix Language Learning – Allows users to watch shows in their target language with interactive subtitles to enhance comprehension.
  • Lirica – Uses music to teach languages, making learning more entertaining and memorable.
  • Pimsleur – Focuses on audio-based learning, ideal for those who prefer listening and speaking practice over reading and writing.

Final Thoughts

Even small efforts can lead to more rewarding experiences, greater cultural appreciation, and memorable adventures. So before you pack your bags, take some time to learn a few phrases—you might be surprised at how much of a difference it makes!

Want to see what we have in our wallets right now?

We put together a full guide of how we set up our travel hacking wallet and how we earn points and miles right now! If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it can be a good place to start!

Here's How We Set Up Our Wallet

Do you think its important to learn a language before going to a new city? What’s your favorite method?

You decided on a country, your tickers are booked and deposits paid, but now you need to actually sit down and decide what to pack for your African safari. Let me tell you- that’s no small feat! There’s a lot to consider when trying to decide the best way to pack for such a monumental trip. Here’s how we packed and what we would do next time.

First of all, it’s worth mentioning that we had a jampacked, 16 day Ugandan Safari. We only stayed in each lodge 1-2 nights and we spent most waking hours on a game drive, trekking or white river rafting! There was not a lot of downtime, and we had to be able to pick up and go often. Obviously, depending on the type of safari, you can adjust what you think you’ll need. For example, if you have more downtime or a less rustic lodge booked, you might want nicer dinner clothes. If you’re camping (which we didn’t do!), you might want to cut down on the amount of gear you’re lugging around. This is just a place for you to start!
