how to plan the perfect new england fall adventure

Ah, fall—the season of crisp air, cozy sweaters, and breathtaking foliage. If you’re anything like us, you wait all year for that magical moment when the leaves turn vibrant shades of orange, red, and yellow. And let me tell you, there’s no better place to soak in the beauty of autumn than New England.

In this episode, we’ll share everything you need to know about planning the perfect fall getaway—when to go, where to visit, and what must-do activities should be on your list. Ready? Let’s dive in!

Why New England in the Fall?

If you’ve never experienced fall in New England, you’re in for a treat. This region is famous for its storybook landscapes, charming small towns, and seasonal traditions that make autumn feel straight out of a movie. Picture yourself sipping warm apple cider while wandering through a pumpkin patch or driving down a scenic road surrounded by fiery foliage—it’s pure magic.

When to Visit for Peak Foliage

Timing is key when planning a fall trip! The leaves start changing in late September, with peak foliage typically happening in early to mid-October. Of course, this varies depending on the state and elevation, so checking a foliage tracker before your trip is a smart move.

Generally speaking:

  • Late September to early October – Best for Northern New England (Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine)
  • Mid to late October – Best for Southern New England (Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut)

Must-Visit Fall Destinations

New England is packed with picturesque spots, but here are my top picks for an unforgettable autumn adventure:

1. Stowe, Vermont

If there’s one place that screams “fall paradise,” it’s Stowe. This charming town is known for its scenic drives, hiking trails, and adorable general stores. Don’t forget to stop by a local maple syrup farm! We love Trapp Family Lodge

2. The White Mountains, New Hampshire

For breathtaking views, you can’t beat the White Mountains. Take a drive along the Kancamagus Highway or hop on the Conway Scenic Railroad for a front-row seat to nature’s best show.

3. The Berkshires, Massachusetts

If you love a mix of nature and culture, the Berkshires are perfect. You can hike through golden forests in the morning and visit world-class museums in the afternoon.

Top Fall Activities You Can’t Miss

Fall in New England isn’t just about looking at leaves—it’s about fully embracing the season. Here are some of my favorite activities:

🍏 Apple Picking – Nothing says fall like picking your own apples straight from the tree. Bonus: fresh cider donuts are often part of the deal!
🎃 Pumpkin Patches & Corn Mazes – Get lost in a corn maze or pick out the perfect pumpkin for your front porch.

🚗 Scenic Drives – Roll down the windows and take a leisurely drive through winding roads lined with golden trees.

🥾 Hiking – Whether it’s a short nature walk or a challenging mountain trail, fall hiking is a must. The views? Absolutely worth it.

Pro Travel Tips for a Perfect Fall Getaway

Before you pack your bags, here are a few travel hacks to make your trip even better:

  • Book early! Fall is a popular time to visit, so accommodations fill up fast.
  • Dress in layers. Mornings can be chilly, but afternoons are often warm and sunny.
  • Go off the beaten path. While well-known spots are amazing, don’t be afraid to explore lesser-known towns for a quieter experience.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for the ultimate fall experience, New England is where it’s at. Whether you’re an adventure seeker or just want to sip cider and enjoy the scenery, there’s something here for everyone. So grab your flannel, plan your trip, and get ready to make some unforgettable autumn memories!

We put together a full guide of how we set up our wallet and how we earn points and miles right now! If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it can be a good place to start!

Here's How We Set Up Our Wallet

Have you ever been to New England in the fall? Drop a comment and let me know your favorite spots!

You decided on a country, your tickers are booked and deposits paid, but now you need to actually sit down and decide what to pack for your African safari. Let me tell you- that’s no small feat! There’s a lot to consider when trying to decide the best way to pack for such a monumental trip. Here’s how we packed and what we would do next time.

First of all, it’s worth mentioning that we had a jampacked, 16 day Ugandan Safari. We only stayed in each lodge 1-2 nights and we spent most waking hours on a game drive, trekking or white river rafting! There was not a lot of downtime, and we had to be able to pick up and go often. Obviously, depending on the type of safari, you can adjust what you think you’ll need. For example, if you have more downtime or a less rustic lodge booked, you might want nicer dinner clothes. If you’re camping (which we didn’t do!), you might want to cut down on the amount of gear you’re lugging around. This is just a place for you to start!
